Book of Martyrs: George Floyd

George Floyd was an African American murdered by police during an arrest after a store clerk alleged he had passed a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis.
Derek Chauvin, one of 4 police officers who arrived on the scene, knelt on Floyd’s neck and back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.  Onlookers at the scene begged Chauvin to relent, but he continued to snuff the life out of Mr. Floyd until he stopped breathing, and even after paramedics arrived.
His last words were: “I can’t breathe.”
George grew up in Houston, where he was a star basketball and football player at Yates High School.  He attended South Florida Community College on a football scholarship, and later transferred to Texas A&M at Kingsville, where he played basketball.
He became well known as a rapper in Houston, performing as “Big Floyd” during the 90s and early 2000s with several rap music groups.
Officer Chauvin was convicted of murder in the killing of George Floyd.
